Welcome to my website! The photo above was taken in my "front yard" (really our west pasture), which looks out onto the canyon that's been cut through these Horseshoe Hills by the mighty Missouri River, less than a mile from my home and studio. I think it's just heaven on Earth, and I am very, very grateful for my life here.
So, why do I do what I do?
I use oils because I love the lush smoothness of the medium as it glides onto the canvas, and the ability it gives me to manipulate both its intensity and texture. My images - all ones that literally thrill me to look at - are sourced from my own photography and cropped close to create a visual tension along the edges of each piece. I've learned that this tight focus also serves to ground me in this wide open country I call home. I enjoy challenging myself to capture bright contrasts, intense colors, and the dramatic light of a specific moment, and the rugged and enduring grace of the working ranch horses used here in Big Sky Country.
I'm an Associate Member of American Women Artists (AWA) and a member of Mondial Art Academie in Aimargues, France. I've been lucky enough to attend workshops with landscape artist Frank Serrano, Native American artist Kevin Red Star, landscape artist Greg Scheibel, wildlife artist Shannon Troxler, to study portrait painting with Susan Blackwood's Jade Street Portrait Painters and to intern with acclaimed Native American artist DG House.
Besides my art practice, I'm a certified Coach and Artist for the Montana Arts Council's "Montana Artrepreneur Program" (MAP), which is a workforce development program designed to help Montana's artists develop a sustainable business in art. 2017 will be my fourth cohort of local artists. This program is a game-changer, and I love everything about it - see more at firstname.lastname@example.org/map. Additionally, I'm employed full-time with the Montana Arts Council. If you're reading this, please know how important it is in our rural economy here in Montana to be almost halfway funded by the NEA! MAP provides artists with a means of becoming sustainable small businesses, while creating jobs - crucial to today's world. Period.
